Skills, Connections, and Readiness to Collectively Flourish In A Complex World

MOXIE Public Schools is a new nonprofit working to ensure each Maine student develops the skills, connections, and readiness to collectively flourish in a complex world. In partnership with families and nonprofits, MOXIE will launch a network of innovative, learner-centered schools designed to address the urgent educational and economic needs of Maine’s rapidly changing student population.

What will it look like if we do this well for kids and families? We’ve defined three key outcomes for all MOXIE learners (students and educators):

CONNECTION AND UNDERSTANDING. 

MOXIE learners will develop deep personal, community, and civic context, history, and networks needed to understand the past and navigate the opportunities and challenges of the present. Through inquiry, interdisciplinary and place-based learning, MOXIE students will “go deep” to understand the histories, stories, cultures, and patterns they are a part of. They’ll learn across lines of difference, developing skills to critically evaluate information, engage in dialogue, and build strong community connections.

CONFIDENCE AND COMPETENCE. 

MOXIE learners will develop the competencies, credentials, and confidence to think critically, work collaboratively, and thrive in future education and workforce learning. This will include showing mastery of academic standards aligned to Maine’s graduation requirements as well as and non-academic, durable skills that prepare learners for success in life beyond high school, like problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. Every graduate will also leave MOXIE with a leg up on the their next chapter— the equivalent of an associate’s degree or career-related credential.

PURPOSE AND COMMITMENT. 

MOXIE learners will develop clarity of personal purpose and the commitment and capability to use that purpose in service of their dreams and a more just and sustainable world. Through project-based learning, internships, career exploration, and self-reflection, MOXIE students will explore and define their passions and superpowers. They’ll also develop clear plans for taking those passions and powers into their future learning and careers.
