A Day in the Life: Meet Maeve, a 7th Grader at MOXIE
What does a school day look like at MOXIE? It starts with a warm hello and ends with purpose.
Let’s follow Maeve, a curious and creative 7th grader, through a typical Wednesday to see how MOXIE helps her build the skills, confidence, and connections she’ll need for her future.
8:45 AM – Community Launch & Advisory
Maeve arrives on campus and heads straight to her advisory circle—her home base every morning. Her advisor, Mr. Rivera, kicks off the day with a check-in and a reflection question: “When have you felt most engaged in your learning this week?” Maeve shares a highlight from yesterday’s group project on community food systems.
Before jumping into the day, Maeve and her “goal buddy” spend a few minutes reviewing their personalized learning plans—a daily routine at MOXIE. Her plan tracks progress on academic competencies, personal growth, and project milestones. Today, she sets two goals: finish editing the podcast draft and complete a targeted set of math practice problems.
9:15 AM – Foundational Learning Block
Next up is Maeve’s personalized English Language Arts and math block. This week, she’s working in a small group focused on persuasive writing. Because learning is competency-based at MOXIE, she’s progressing at her own pace—with plenty of guidance and encouragement from Ms. Tran, who uses real-time data to tailor instruction. Maeve’s reading has come a long way since last year, and now she’s even drafting letters to local leaders as part of her writing practice. In math, she logs in to an adaptive program aligned to her learning plan and works on multi-step equations with support from a peer tutor.
11:00 AM – Clubs & Service
Maeve is part of the “Green Team,” a student-led sustainability club. Today, they’re designing signage to help classmates sort their waste correctly in the cafeteria. Service time at MOXIE isn’t an extra—it’s part of how students practice leadership, agency, and collaboration.
11:30 AM – Lunch & Movement
Lunch is community time. Students are free to eat, move around, or visit the wellness room for a quiet reset. Maeve grabs a bite, checks in with friends, and takes a short walk outside—she’s gearing up for a big project presentation this afternoon.
12:15 PM – Learning Experience Block
This is Maeve’s favorite part of the day: her interdisciplinary “Learning Experience” block. Her cohort is in week four of a seven-week inquiry project exploring Maine’s food systems through the lenses of science, history, and civic action. Maeve’s group is creating a podcast featuring interviews with local farmers and food pantry leaders. She’s the lead editor, combining her growing writing and tech skills in a real-world context.
2:00 PM – Wellness & Language
In the afternoon, Maeve joins a mixed-grade yoga and mindfulness class. MOXIE’s wellness program emphasizes the importance of physical and emotional balance. After that, she heads to World Languages, where she’s continuing her study of French through interactive lessons and conversation with a local community volunteer.
3:45 PM – Daily Reflection
Before heading home, Maeve stops by her advisory group again for a quick end-of-day reflection. With her learning plan in hand, she checks off her progress for the day and sets two clear goals for tomorrow:
“Ask one more follow-up question during our podcast interview.”
“Master the next math skill on my playlist—solving for variables.”
Why It Matters
Maeve’s day at MOXIE is structured, yet flexible—built around her needs, strengths, and interests. With consistent relationships, integrated support, and authentic learning opportunities, she’s not just “getting through” middle school. She’s thriving.
At MOXIE, every student’s journey is different—but they all leave with the skills, purpose, and community they need to flourish.
