Work at MOXIE!

Part-Time School Bus Driver (~20 Hours/Wk)

Reports to: Chief of School Operations

Location: 123 Darling Ave, South Portland, Maine

Start Date: August 31, 2026

MOXIE Public Schools is a new public school system in Maine built around a simple belief: every learner has untapped potential, and every adult in our community plays a role in unlocking it. We are a place with warm relationships and high expectations: students are known well, held to a high bar, and supported to reach it.

Our bus drivers are the first MOXIE team member students see in the morning and the last they see before heading home. That makes this one of the most important relationships in a child’s day — and a genuine part of our culture, not an afterthought.

Role Summary

We are hiring a part-time School Bus Driver to safely transport students to and from school and, from time to time, on field trips and school activities. You’ll drive a set daily route on a predictable schedule, keep your bus safe and welcoming, and set the tone for a great day — with a friendly “good morning,” a calm and orderly ride, and a watchful eye on every student in your care.

Pay: $30 per hour

Hours: Approximately 4 hours split shift per day — typically a morning (~7:15-9:15 am) and an afternoon route (~3:45-5:45 pm), aligned to the school calendar

Extra work: Occasional paid field trips and school activities, offered as they come up

Schedule: School-year calendar; summers and school breaks off with paid snow days

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport students to and from school along an assigned route, on time and — above all — safely.

  • Create a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment on the bus, building positive relationships with students and setting clear, kind expectations.

  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and report any maintenance or safety concerns promptly.

  • Follow all traffic laws, Maine Department of Education transportation rules, and MOXIE safety procedures at all times.

  • Respond calmly and appropriately to student needs, behavior, and any emergencies, keeping student safety the top priority.

  • Support occasional field trips and school activities as scheduling allows.

  • Communicate professionally with families, school staff, and the operations team.

Qualifications

  • A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. (If you have your CDL and are working toward the endorsements, let’s talk.)

  • A clean driving record and the ability to pass a DOT physical, background checks, and fingerprinting as required for Maine school employees.

  • Patience, warmth, and a genuine care for kids — you understand that how a student is greeted in the morning shapes their whole day.

  • Alignment with MOXIE’s mission and six core values: Know Yourself, Show Courage, Stay Curious, Do Your Part, Build What Matters, and Lift Others Up.

  • Strong judgment, dependability, and a calm, safety-first mindset behind the wheel.

  • Reliable punctuality and consistent attendance across the school year.

No prior school-bus experience but licensed? If you’re a safe, caring driver willing to earn the right endorsements, we encourage you to share your resume for future hiring.

What You'll Get at MOXIE

  • Safety first, always. We take safety seriously. Clear procedures, well-maintained buses, and a team that has your back mean you can focus on doing the job right.

  • You belong here. Drivers are part of the MOXIE team. You will be known by name, respected for the role you play, and treated as a real part of a student’s day.

  • Culture that means it. Warm relationships and high expectations go together. You’ll be part of a school community that believes in every student and in every adult who serves them. Student bus expectations will be coherent with school-day expectations.

  • Fair pay, real schedule. $30/hour, a predictable schedule with summers and breaks off, and occasional paid field trips— work that fits around your life.

  • Meaningful work. The best part of the job: you get to know your students, and you get to be a steady, friendly presence they can count on.

To apply, send a brief note about yourself and your driving experience — along with your CDL and endorsement details — to alex@moxiepublicschools.me. We’d love to hear why you’d be a great fit behind the wheel for our students.
